“[...] In Le Petit Poucet (2019), his most recent video, Lucas Seguy imagines a third process where nature is no longer a witness but an essential actor in the reproduction of the species. This role given to nature seems to go hand in hand with the neutralization of the sexes. Where Les Trois Grâces and Pygmalion still accorded a significant place to the masculine and the feminine, Le Petit Poucet goes further in this recomposition of the modes of reproduction by minimizing the role of the genital organs through non-differentiation and by externalizing the function of gestation. This last responsibility, now entrusted to nature, suggests that the species can enjoy the sensoriality of the sexes without risk of fertilization. Dissociated from the sexual relationship, procreation appears as an opportunity, seized, since fertilization results from the simple connection of the genital organs with the member of the body of a third party, here a toe carelessly abandoned and picked up. The genital apparatus then resembles a power terminal so that the creation of a new being occurs by a kind of chance where without real desire or duty, everyone can contribute to the reproduction of the species. This third hypothesis evokes both anonymous donations of sperm and oocyte, as well as surrogacy which, beyond compensating for biological deficiencies and situations of infertility, offers the possibility of protecting against bodily harm related to pregnancy. Lucas Seguy opens here a window on a “humanity” almost totally freed from its procreative function where the reproduction of the species, already envisaged in Pygmalion, is a mechanical act carried out by a body-supplier.”
